Senior Staff Assistant
Kathy has been a Staff Assistant in the Department since January of 2005. She moved to Logan in the summer of 2004 when her husband accepted a job at USU. Kathy said, "I looked at the job postings at the university for six months before deciding to apply to the Department of Landscape Architecture. I made the right choice and have never wanted to leave."
Kathy coordinates all functions of the front office as senior staff and assists graduate students with applications, scheduling and graduation paperwork. She is the departmental Graduate Coordinator with the School of Graduate Studies and can been reached either by email or phone regarding difficulties or questions with graduate applications.
Since joining LAEP, Kathy was named Outstanding Staff Person of the Year for the College of HASS in 2009, she was awarded the Outstanding Exempt Employee of the Year for Utah State University in 2010 and most recently was given the Service to Students Award for the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences.
Until the past two years Kathy was the sole editor doing all graphic design/layout of the departmental newsletter InSites and transitioned the publication from a B/W newsletter to a full-color magazine. For the past two years she and Pam George have worked to bring the publication to another level. The 2012 edition was given a Merit award in Communications from Utah ASLA.
Prior to moving to Logan, Kathy lived 13 years in Nebraska, 2 years in Maine, several in Washington State, and primarily grew up in Oregon and British Columbia. She has a BS degree in Sociology from Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon, and a Social Studies Secondary Ed Certificate. She was an Assistant Marketing Manager in Portland, Oregon, taught in Maine and was a substitute teacher in Nebraska while her daughter was growing up. She also worked as a Public Information Specialist at a Natural Resources District in Nebraska where she created District publications and taught environmental and conservation seminars to clients and school groups.
Kathy loves living in Utah because of the great access to public lands and campgrounds where she and her husband spend as much time as they can in their RV "second home". They live in Logan with a rescue dog Maggie, two cats, a horse and an elderly donkey that made the trip from Nebraska.
Kathy can be reached regarding questions about LAEP or regarding the MLA program either by email or phone at 435 797-0501.
